Glossary of photovoltaics and solar energy
POwR Connect offers you its glossary on the key concepts of photovoltaics and solar energy.
S
Shelter
A shelter is an outdoor transformation station, including inverters, transformers, protection cells, and main low-voltage switchboards.
Silicon
Silicon is a chemical element that occurs naturally in the Earth's crust. It is a semiconductor material found in virtually all electronic systems and is also used in the manufacture of solar panels.
Passive solar
Unlike active solar energy, passive solar energy is created for free by the absorption of sunlight through a house's windows and glass doors. The energy is stored in the walls, ceiling, and floor, then released as heat into the home.
Solar thermal
Solar thermal energy involves capturing the sun's rays using thermal collectors. The energy generated is then transferred to metallic absorbers that radiate heat and provide hot water for domestic use. This is the system used in solar water heaters, among other things.
Thermodynamic solar
Concentrated solar energy involves capturing the sun's radiation using mirrors to generate very high temperatures (from 400 to 1000 °C). The heat obtained transforms water into steam in a boiler.
